Hockey India mourns the loss of former Indian Olympian Gurbax Singh Grewal, who passed away at the age of 84. Grewal, a key member of India’s bronze medal-winning team at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, is remembered for his contributions as a player, mentor, and administrator.
Born on April 1, 1942, in Lyallpur, Punjab Province of British India (now in Pakistan), Gurbax Singh Grewal was known for his speed as a forward. Alongside his brother Balbir Singh Grewal, he made history at the 1968 Olympics as the first real brothers to represent India together in hockey at the same Olympic Games.
After relocating to Mumbai in his early 20s to pursue hockey, Grewal had a distinguished career with Western Railways. Following his retirement, he remained actively involved in the sport, coaching Mumbai teams for years and later serving as the honorary secretary of the Mumbai Hockey Association.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh expressed deep sorrow at Grewal’s passing, highlighting his significant role in Indian hockey. Tirkey praised Grewal’s dedication to nurturing young talent, while Singh emphasized his lasting impact on the sport, stating that Grewal’s legacy will inspire future generations.
