India’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin, addressed assertions that India aligns with the United States, calling them unjust and inaccurate. Akbaruddin emphasized that India’s actions demonstrate independence from the US, citing instances such as refraining from joining the Board of Peace initiated by the US and Pakistan. He highlighted India’s autonomy in decisions, including negotiations with Iran, despite US preferences.

During an interaction with podcaster Raj Shamani, Akbaruddin pointed out that India’s stance on various global issues, like the conflict in Ukraine, further illustrates its non-alignment with the US. He mentioned India’s decision to abstain from taking sides in certain situations, contrary to US expectations. Akbaruddin emphasized that India’s foreign policy is not dictated by the US and refuted claims of subservience.

Critics in India, particularly the Opposition, have accused the government of being influenced by US President Trump. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has been vocal in alleging that the Indian Prime Minister operates under US pressure, suggesting a compromised position. However, Akbaruddin’s remarks underline India’s independent foreign policy decisions, contradicting claims of following the US.
