With the former Intelligence Bureau (IB) top officer and former Governor of Tamil Nadu, R.N. Ravi, taking oath as the 22nd Governor of West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized that ‘Bengal loves those who love Bengal’. After the oath ceremony, the Chief Minister welcomed the new Governor by wrapping a piece of the cloak around his neck, conveying a subtle message.
Banerjee highlighted Bengal’s inclusive nature, stating that the state values individuals from all linguistic backgrounds and that Bengal cherishes those who reciprocate the sentiment. Responding to the Chief Minister, the Governor acknowledged West Bengal’s status as the intellectual and cultural capital of India.
Political analysts view Banerjee’s message, “Bengal loves those who love Bengal,” as a nuanced communication to the new Governor, emphasizing the importance of a harmonious relationship between the Governor’s House and the State Secretariat. The statement is seen as significant in light of past tensions between the two entities during the Trinamool Congress regime.
Ravi, who succeeds C.V. Ananda Bose following his sudden resignation, is the second former IB officer to assume the role of West Bengal Governor in recent years. His appointment comes amidst a backdrop of political transitions and historical significance in the state’s governance.
