Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP Member of Parliament Basavaraj Bommai criticized the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975, labeling it a troubling period in India’s history. Bommai emphasized the importance of safeguarding democracy and the Constitution, urging citizens to remain committed to these values. He highlighted how the Emergency restricted democratic institutions and fundamental rights, urging vigilance against any threats to democracy.
Bommai accused the Congress leadership, led by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, of using the Emergency to maintain political power. He pointed out that the imposition of the Emergency led to the curtailment of fundamental rights, imprisonment of opposition leaders, and a stifling of democracy. Bommai credited public awareness post-Emergency as a key reason for the Congress party’s current position in the national Opposition.
The BJP leader commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his dedication to upholding constitutional values. Bommai praised PM Modi for prioritizing service to the people and consistently adhering to constitutional principles. He lauded PM Modi as a staunch defender of the Constitution and a significant contributor to India’s progress and development.
Advocating for national unity, Bommai called on citizens to stay vigilant against divisive elements. He stressed the importance of learning from the Emergency’s lessons and uniting to protect democracy. Bommai emphasized the necessity of standing together to defend the nation and its democratic ideals, urging all patriots to unite against divisive forces.
