In the aftermath of the Left Democratic Front’s significant loss in the Kerala Assembly elections, former legislator Sebastian Paul has directly blamed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for the defeat, citing it as a rejection of his leadership style. Paul, a previous supporter of the Left, highlighted public discontent not just with governance but with Vijayan personally, attributing an authoritarian approach to the Chief Minister’s actions within both the government and the party. He criticized Vijayan’s communication style as unbecoming of a good leader.
Sebastian Paul openly questioned Vijayan’s suitability for the role of Leader of the Opposition, emphasizing that the election campaign overly focused on an individual rather than the collective LDF, undermining democratic principles. He stressed that continuous rule is not a democratic right and criticized Vijayan for stifling internal questioning and accountability. Paul also raised concerns about the overshadowing of the party structure and the centralization of power.
While acknowledging Vijayan’s crisis management skills, Paul highlighted that the Chief Minister’s personal style and unilateral decision-making had negative consequences. He alleged a lack of tolerance for dissent within the party and claimed that his own political career was hindered due to disagreements with Vijayan. Social media has seen a surge in criticism directed at Vijayan and party leader M.V. Govindan, reflecting a growing discomfort within Left circles following the electoral defeat.
