Former MP Prajwal Revanna has decided to attend the funeral of his grandmother, Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, through video conference from Bengaluru Central Prison. Chennamma passed away due to a cardiac arrest at a Bengaluru hospital on Saturday. She had been admitted to Manipal Hospital with breathing difficulties and other age-related issues.
Prison authorities confirmed that Prajwal Revanna opted not to seek temporary release or parole to physically attend the funeral. Instead, he requested and received approval to participate virtually in the last rites. The funeral is being held in Hassan district with full traditional honors for Chennamma.
Despite being advised by his father, former minister H.D. Revanna, Prajwal chose not to seek parole due to concerns about public attention and potential inconvenience to the family and authorities, given his conviction in a rape case. The prison department granted his request to join the funeral proceedings via video conference.
Authorities clarified that Prajwal Revanna did not apply for parole or temporary bail, as he is currently serving his sentence in Bengaluru Central Prison. In cases of serious offenses like rape, parole is typically granted only under exceptional circumstances and with approval from relevant authorities. Prajwal will observe the funeral either through a television in his cell or via a video conferencing setup arranged by the prison administration.
