Nepal’s former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has gracefully accepted the people’s decision following his party’s significant losses in the recent House of Representatives elections. Oli, who leads the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), faced a surprising defeat against Balen Shah, the prime ministerial candidate of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, in the Jhapa-5 constituency, a stronghold of Oli’s party.
Shah, a former mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, achieved a historic victory with 68,348 votes, the highest ever in Nepal’s parliamentary history, while Oli received a mere 18,734 votes. Oli’s party also performed poorly, securing only nine seats out of the 165 available under the First Past the Post system in the House of Representatives.
Expressing his sentiments on social media, Oli acknowledged the election outcome and emphasized the importance of respecting the people’s verdict in a democracy. Despite the defeat, he affirmed his party’s unwavering commitment to serving the people and vowed to maintain a strong bond of trust with the public.
In the aftermath of the election setback, videos circulating on social media show Oli criticizing the Rastriya Swatantra Party and its leader Shah, drawing ridicule from users. The electoral defeat faced by Oli and other prominent leaders from traditional political parties reflects a growing public discontent fueled by power struggles and corruption allegations within the political landscape.
