Former Prime Minister and JD(S) MP H.D. Deve Gowda voiced his approval for the Union Budget 2026-27 during a discussion in the Rajya Sabha. He commended the budget’s focus on economic reforms, tax simplification, and structural changes aimed at sustaining growth amidst global challenges.
Deve Gowda highlighted the importance of employment as a central policy concern, stating that growth alone is insufficient. He emphasized the need for strong skilling initiatives, local support systems, affordable credit, and predictable regulations to create significant job opportunities in manufacturing and MSMEs.
Expressing concerns about taxation, Deve Gowda welcomed efforts to simplify the system but stressed the significance of taxpayers’ confidence. He emphasized the necessity for proper safeguards in any changes affecting cash flow or settled matters to ensure honest taxpayers feel secure.
The former PM called for increased focus beyond the national capital and major corridors towards cities and districts across India. He advocated for enhanced urban governance, water security, climate resilience, and balanced regional development to promote equitable progress.
Deve Gowda proposed the establishment of a national board for jackfruit, tamarind, and jamun to support farmers. He suggested that cultivating these crops could boost farmers’ incomes in water-scarce regions and meet rising market demands, emphasizing the need for value addition and wider cultivation.
In his closing statements, Deve Gowda underscored the importance of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,’ emphasizing the need for inclusive, sustainable, and just growth. He expressed optimism that the budget would be remembered for its wisdom in building a strong economy for the present and a better tomorrow.
