Rezaul Khan, the ex-Trinamool Congress president of Indpur block in Bankura district, was apprehended by the police for allegedly attacking a BJP worker and molesting his wife. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by the BJP worker, accusing Rezaul of assaulting him at his home and molesting his spouse. The incident also involved vandalism and threats to the family with firearms.
The Bankura district police confirmed the arrest, stating that Rezaul was taken into custody by the Indpur police station officers based on the complaint. Subsequently, he was presented before the Khatra Sub-Divisional Court in Bankura, which remanded him to three days of police custody. The arrest is part of a series of detentions of Trinamool Congress leaders in the state on various charges post the BJP’s rise to power.
The complainant revealed that prior to the recent Assembly elections, he had accused Rezaul of corruption, leading to a retaliatory attack by the Trinamool Congress leader and his associates. The complaint detailed property damage, alleged molestation of the complainant’s wife, and threats of violence using firearms. Prompt action was taken by the Indpur police station upon receiving the written complaint.
Rezaul Khan chose not to respond to the allegations against him, but his lawyer, Chanchal Roy, suggested a political motive behind the case. Roy mentioned that a complaint of gunpoint assault was filed against his client post the change in government, leading to a rejected bail application and Rezaul’s placement in police custody for three days.
