Four suspended AAP legislators have written to Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, demanding the resignation of Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra over a controversial video involving former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi. The MLAs, including Sanjeev Jha, Som Dutt, Kuldeep Kumar, and Jarnail Singh, were suspended for disrupting Assembly proceedings and protested outside with banners calling for Mishra’s resignation.
AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha stated that they have formally asked the Speaker to take strict action against Kapil Mishra. The legislators have demanded Mishra’s resignation, the suspension of those who shared the video on social media for six months, and the release of the full video for transparency. Jha highlighted Atishi’s concerns on pollution and criticized the BJP for dragging Guru Sahib’s name into the controversy.
Another AAP MLA, Mukesh Alhawat, condemned the exploitation of religious sentiments for political purposes, emphasizing the need for impartial action against such actions. Jarnail Singh, an AAP MLA, called for strict measures against BJP leaders responsible for editing and circulating the misleading video. Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta refuted claims by AAP’s Leader of Opposition Atishi regarding the suspension of the legislators.
Gupta clarified that the suspension was unrelated to wearing masks and was aimed at maintaining the House’s authority and dignity. The Speaker referred the matter to the Committee of Privileges for examination. The AAP defended Atishi against BJP’s allegations of making derogatory remarks about Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur, accusing the BJP of spreading misinformation through a doctored video.
