At least four workers sustained injuries in an explosion at a sponge iron factory in the Jamuria area under Asansol Municipal Corporation, West Burdwan district. The incident occurred late at night in the Sheikhpur area of the Ikra Industrial Estate in Jamuria. Prompt response from police and fire brigade teams led to the rescue of the affected workers, who were subsequently taken to the hospital for medical attention.
As news of the explosion spread, political leaders also visited the site to assess the situation. A local resident, Kanchan Pal, reported that the blast took place at a private factory in the vicinity, causing alarm among the residents. The explosion was so intense that it resulted in structural damage to several houses in the area.
Authorities swiftly arrived at the scene upon receiving reports of the accident and initiated rescue operations. The entire area was cordoned off by the police to manage the aftermath of the incident. The factory premises experienced heightened tension following the explosion.
Although initial assumptions pointed to a furnace explosion as the cause, the exact trigger remains uncertain. An investigation has been launched by the police to ascertain the precise circumstances leading to the accident. Simultaneously, the factory authorities have commenced their own inquiry into the matter.
The incident has underscored concerns regarding the safety of night shift workers. Local residents are urging the administration to enforce stringent measures to prevent such accidents in the future and ensure adequate compensation for the affected families. A local BJP leader, Deep Banerjee, emphasized the lack of safety protocols at the factory and pledged to advocate for the affected families’ rights.
