The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart following consumer complaints of various violations. These complaints, shared on social media platform X, raised concerns about the delivery of expired, spoiled, and contaminated food products. One notable issue highlighted was the improper branding of eggs, not covered under the approved FSSAI license categories.
Among the reported complaints were instances of products like ‘Healthify 100 per cent Whey Protein 1 kg’ and ‘Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts’ being supplied after their expiry dates. An ‘Akshayakalpa Organic Egg’ was also found expired and contaminated, while ‘Kakke da Paratha’ was deemed unfit for consumption due to spoilage and foul odor.
Despite escalations, no corrective actions were taken by the Food Business Operator (FBO) in response to the complaints. Furthermore, an infant food formulation was identified as deteriorated and unsafe, yet it was resupplied to a consumer after being returned as defective.
FSSAI has instructed the FBO to provide a detailed explanation addressing the reported non-compliances and the circumstances surrounding these incidents. The regulator has also requested information on the company’s food safety protocols, quality assurance measures, corrective steps taken, and preventive measures to avoid similar occurrences. Failure to comply within the specified period may lead to enforcement action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
