Panic gripped the Kondhwa area of Pune, Maharashtra, as a hazardous gas leak occurred from a storage tank at a chemical facility near Gangadham Chowk. Initially, 17 people complained of breathing issues and were hospitalized, with more expected. The leak, believed to be from a cylinder containing chlorine gas left at an abandoned water purification unit, prompted swift action.
Responding promptly, the Fire Department transported 14 affected individuals to Sassoon General Hospital and nearby medical centers using government ambulance services. Evacuations were carried out in the affected areas, and even emergency responders were impacted, with a fire officer and firefighter hospitalized for treatment. The situation has been contained, thanks to the deployment of four fire tenders equipped with Breathing Apparatus sets.
Authorities have confirmed that the situation is now stable, and all affected individuals are safe. An investigation has been launched to determine how hazardous material ended up at the defunct facility, raising concerns about safety protocols. More information is awaited as the inquiry progresses.
