The government has made changes to the regulations for foreign nationals staying in India for over 180 days, now requiring them to register before the 180-day limit expires. Previously, foreigners had to register within 14 days after completing 180 days in India.
Under the new provisions, individuals entering India with visas valid for 180 days or less, and wishing to extend their stay, must register before the initial 180-day period ends. The amendments, part of the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, also apply to those holding visas for more than 180 days, with a condition on the length of each stay.
Foreigners with visas for more than 180 days must now complete registration before reaching the 180-day mark. Exceptions for late registration will only be permitted in urgent situations, as stated by the government.
The revised rules also address children born to foreign national parents. Previously, parents had to inform authorities within 30 days of a child’s birth for visa-related services. However, this requirement is waived if one parent is an Indian citizen and wishes to retain Indian citizenship for the child.
Additionally, changes have been made to reporting procedures for medical institutions offering accommodation facilities.
