The government has conducted a study to identify gaps in current outreach efforts and improve support for the Sikh Community, as stated by Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju in the Rajya Sabha. The study, titled ‘Outreach to the Sikh community,’ was carried out by the National Commission for Minorities to understand the unique challenges faced by the community. Its aim was to pinpoint existing gaps and suggest strategies to enhance support, inclusivity, and engagement for Sikhs in various sectors.
Highlighting efforts to boost the socio-economic status of minority communities, Rijiju mentioned the appointment of Harjit Singh Grewal from the Sikh Community as the Chairperson of the NCM. The Ministry focuses on affirmative action and inclusive development to ensure minority communities receive a fair share in education, employment, and economic activities, promoting their upliftment and equal participation. Various schemes like Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) are being implemented, along with providing loans at lower interest rates through the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation (NMDFC).
To foster social harmony and understanding among different religious groups, the NCM organizes Sarv Dharm Samvad meetings and celebrates major festivals of minority religions. The Commission advises all States/UTs to hold regular Sarv Dharm Samvad meetings and Sarv Dharm Sadbhav events involving religious leaders, community representatives, NGOs, and government officials to promote social harmony and mutual understanding. These initiatives aim to address minority concerns, raise awareness, and ensure effective implementation of government welfare schemes for minority communities.
