Government e Marketplace (GeM) celebrated its Incorporation Day 2026 on Saturday, emphasizing its crucial role in enhancing transparency, efficiency, and technology-driven governance in India’s public procurement sector. The platform currently accommodates over 1.36 lakh government buyers and nearly 25 lakh sellers and service providers, with a significant 72% of active sellers being micro and small enterprises, as per the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
During the fiscal year 2026, GeM facilitated over 11 lakh Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in securing more than 51 lakh orders valued at Rs 2.36 lakh crore. Notably, women-led MSEs received orders surpassing Rs 28,000 crore, while Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) entrepreneurs obtained orders exceeding Rs 6,000 crore, and startups secured orders worth over Rs 19,000 crore, showcasing the platform’s commitment to broadening access to government procurement and fostering entrepreneurship.
As part of the Incorporation Day activities, GeM conducted various stakeholder engagement and knowledge-sharing programs. These initiatives included a vendor assessment workshop initiated on May 15, 2026, to provide clarity on vendor assessment procedures and documentation requirements for potential Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
A “GeM Manthan” event is scheduled for May 21, 2026, themed “Enriching the GeM Marketplace,” as announced by the ministry. Additionally, on May 22, 2026, the e-marketplace will host a brainstorming session with Defence Services representatives to discuss process enhancements and technological interventions aimed at aligning with Defence procurement and operational needs.
“GeM was established with the vision of creating a transparent, efficient, and inclusive digital procurement platform for the Government and its agencies. Today, it continues to support Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Vocal for Local by bridging domestic enterprises with government procurement opportunities,” stated Mihir Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of GeM.
The Government e-Marketplace Special Purpose Vehicle was established on May 17, 2017, to develop, manage, and maintain the GeM platform. Over time, the platform has evolved into a significant digital public procurement platform, facilitating ease of doing business and broader market access for sellers nationwide. Notably, it has witnessed increased engagement from Class-1 local suppliers across various sectors such as pharmaceuticals, transportation, construction equipment, furniture, textiles, and medical consumables.
