The government has launched initiatives to enhance the development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in the country. Since 2015, a total of Rs 38,572 crore has been allocated for various schemes in this sector. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh will inaugurate the Smart Green Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute in Telangana on January 5, 2026.
Smart Green Aquaculture Limited has established India’s first commercial-scale tropical Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)–based Rainbow Trout Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute. This farm in Telangana proves that high-value cold-water species like Rainbow Trout can be farmed year-round in tropical climates. The project serves as a training platform for youth in advanced aquaculture systems, strengthening human capital in the fisheries sector.
Cold water fisheries are becoming a significant segment within the broader fisheries sector. Trout farming, particularly in Himalayan and hill states, is crucial for the aquaculture sector. The government is focusing on strategic investments, technology adoption, and institutional reforms to drive growth in aquaculture.
