The Department of Telecommunications has launched user-friendly reforms under the PM-WANI framework to enhance affordable public Wi-Fi access nationwide. These reforms include QR-based authentication for secondary devices like laptops, short-duration Wi-Fi plans of 15, 30, and 60 minutes, and standardization of PM-WANI hotspot names for better identification. All stakeholders are required to implement these guidelines within eight weeks, with full implementation expected by July 2026.
Users will now be able to connect laptops and other devices by scanning a QR code through an authenticated smartphone app, simplifying the login process and enhancing accessibility. Hotspot operators are encouraged to offer short-duration plans to cater to commuters, students, and users needing brief internet access at public locations. The standardization of PM-WANI hotspot names aims to help users easily recognize authentic networks and reduce confusion.
The government’s objective is to provide accessible and affordable digital connectivity to all citizens, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. Led by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the PM-WANI ecosystem is undergoing a significant transformation to enhance accessibility, interoperability, ease of use, and citizen adoption. Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani highlighted the platform’s focus on universal public Wi-Fi access, emphasizing ease of use and adoption.
The PM-WANI ecosystem, operating through a network of Public Data Offices, PDO aggregators, and app providers, is expected to witness increased adoption with the implementation of these new reforms.
