The government has initiated the Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification Projects with a budget of Rs 37,500 crore. This scheme aims to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030, enhancing India’s energy security and reducing reliance on imports of commodities like LNG, urea, ammonia, and methanol. A roadshow organized by the Coal Ministry is set to advocate coal gasification as a cleaner and value-added method for utilizing India’s abundant coal and lignite resources.
The roadshow is part of the ministry’s efforts to boost the development of a sustainable coal gasification ecosystem in the country. It will convene policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and other stakeholders to discuss opportunities, partnerships, and the future direction of coal gasification in India. The Scheme is expected to attract investments of Rs 2.5–3 lakh crore, creating around 50,000 direct and indirect job opportunities through approximately 25 projects in coal-rich regions.
Under this initiative, the utilization of 75 million tonnes of coal and lignite is forecasted to generate an annual revenue of nearly Rs 6,300 crore, along with additional downstream revenue from GST and other taxes. Building on the National Coal Gasification Mission launched in 2021 and the previously approved Rs. 8,500 crore coal gasification schemes, the new scheme provides substantial backing for coal gasification projects in the country.
