The Government announced that almost 8 million piped natural gas (PNG) connections have been established since March 2026, with infrastructure developed for an additional 2.87 lakh connections, bringing the total to 10.86 lakh connections. This initiative aims to enhance access to cleaner fuel nationwide. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas revealed these updates during a media briefing at the National Media Centre, emphasizing efforts to monitor the situation in West Asia and its potential impact on fuel availability and energy security.
About 8.27 lakh customers have registered for new connections, with domestic PNG consumers and CNG transport users receiving 100% gas supplies on a priority basis. Moreover, gas supply to industrial and commercial sectors, including through city gas distribution (CGD) networks, has been increased to 80%. To reduce reliance on commercial LPG, CGD entities are advised to prioritize PNG connections for establishments like hotels, restaurants, and canteens nationwide.
The Centre has urged states, Union Territories, and central ministries to expedite approvals necessary for the expansion of CGD infrastructure. Currently, 22 states and Union Territories are benefiting from additional commercial LPG allocation tied to PNG expansion reforms. The government had previously offered an extra 10% allocation of commercial LPG to states supporting the long-term shift from LPG to PNG. Notably, a significant policy decision was made with the notification of the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act on March 24, 2026, aiming to streamline pipeline laying and expansion processes across the country.
