The government announced the approval of 2,87,618 additional houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0), bringing the total sanctioned houses to over 13.61 lakh. Among these, over 1.60 lakh houses have been allocated to women, including widows, separated, or unmarried females. Notably, eight dwelling units have been sanctioned for Transgenders, with specific allocations for senior citizens, SC, ST, and OBC beneficiaries.
Reflecting its commitment to providing dignified and affordable housing, the government ensures access to urban families from EWS, LIG, and MIG categories. The recent approvals cover 16 States/UTs under various verticals of PMAY-U 2.0, including Beneficiary Led Construction, Affordable Housing in Partnership, and Affordable Rental Housing. Additionally, 96% of the sanctioned houses are in the name of female heads of households, emphasizing empowerment.
Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, highlighted the importance of prioritizing housing projects near mass transit corridors and ensuring AHP houses are conveniently located within cities. He also stressed the need to showcase successful affordable housing projects for cross-learning among States/UTs. The ministry’s focus on promoting rental housing through ARH aims to address the housing needs of various vulnerable urban groups.
