Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, known for delivering 118 warships to the maritime forces, unveiled its first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) named ‘Sanghmitra’ on May 20. The NGOPVs, with four in production for the Navy, mark a significant advancement in size, endurance, and firepower compared to previous vessels. These warships, about 113 meters long and 14.6 meters wide, will serve various roles, including coastal operations, maritime interdiction, and humanitarian missions.
Sarita Vatsayan, wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, launched the warship, embodying the spirit of community as ‘Sanghmitra’ translates to ‘friend of the community.’ GRSE’s expertise in constructing warships and patrol vessels is well-established, with notable projects like the OPV MCGS Barracuda. The shipyard’s recent success includes delivering eight ships in a year, showcasing its efficiency and commitment to naval advancements.
The NGOPVs are designed for diverse missions, such as mine warfare, anti-piracy operations, and search and rescue efforts. These vessels, with a speed capability of up to 23 knots and an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles, will significantly enhance the Navy’s operational capabilities. Vice Admiral Vatsayan praised GRSE’s contributions to the Navy, emphasizing the importance of the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel project in strengthening maritime security.
Cmde PR Hari, chairman and managing director of GRSE, highlighted the shipyard’s technological progress and commitment to delivering cutting-edge platforms to the Indian Navy. The launch of ‘Sanghmitra’ signifies the beginning of a new phase for GRSE, with multiple launches and deliveries planned for the upcoming year.
