The Gujarat government has transitioned 20 high-demand public services to online platforms to streamline access and reduce processing time for numerous applicants. These services, integral to the ‘Digital Gujarat’ platform, receive approximately 1.2 crore applications annually, with 87 lakh linked to the now digitized services, showcasing their significance in citizens’ interactions with the government. This initiative, in line with the “Sugam Digital Gujarat” project under the Science and Technology Department, aligns with recommendations from the Gujarat Administrative Reforms Commission’s fifth report.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the government aims to make these 20 frequently used services citizen-centric by digitizing them, promoting faceless, cashless, and paperless governance. The primary goal is to simplify government services, making them faster, more transparent, and easily accessible to citizens. The initial phase includes services from five departments, such as Social Justice and Empowerment, Food and Civil Supplies, Revenue, Legal, and Tribal Development, covering a range of essential services like caste certificates, ration card services, and affidavit-related services.
Currently, only a small percentage of services on the Digital Gujarat platform offer end-to-end digital delivery, with most still accessible through Jan Seva Kendras and e-Gram centers. The new system allows citizens to input their data once and reuse it for multiple services, with simplified application forms and reduced document requirements. Verification processes will be digitalized through Aadhaar-based authentication, online record checks, and integration with DigiLocker, enhancing efficiency and accuracy.
The state government anticipates that these changes will streamline approval processes, leading to quicker application processing. By eliminating the need for physical visits to offices, citizens are expected to save time and travel costs. Improved data integration is set to enhance accuracy and reduce errors in certificate issuance. The government is committed to advancing citizen-centric governance, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a Developed India. Future plans include expanding the Sugam Digital Gujarat initiative to cover more services and implementing technology-driven projects, including the development of artificial intelligence models in the Gujarati language.
