On the eve of the first anniversary of the Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 260 lives, the Gujarat government has unveiled a redevelopment plan worth over Rs 547 crore. The plan aims to transform the disaster-hit site into a healthcare, rehabilitation, and medical education hub. The proposal includes building a Paraplegia and Spine Hospital, a rehabilitation center, a physiotherapy college, student accommodation, a canteen, and a Food and Drugs laboratory.
The redevelopment blueprint covers the New Mental Campus in Meghaninagar area, adjacent to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. This area was struck by the London-bound Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash last year, resulting in the loss of 260 lives. The government plans to demolish the damaged structures and construct new facilities like a specialized hospital, rehabilitation center, and educational amenities.
Health Minister Praful Pansheriya expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragic plane crash. He emphasized the government’s commitment to rebuilding the area with a focus on healthcare and medical education. The proposed redevelopment project at the crash site includes a Paraplegia and Spine Hospital, a Rehabilitation Centre, a Physiotherapy College, and hostel facilities for students.
According to official documents, the New Mental Campus spans around 1,71,100 square meters and currently houses various staff quarters, hostels, and a canteen. The crash affected several buildings constructed in 2015-16, including hostel blocks and a canteen building. The government’s plan involves constructing new facilities like hostel blocks, a canteen, and a laboratory to enhance healthcare and education infrastructure.
