The Gujarat government has decided to halt elections for the management committees of specified cooperative societies for six months. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar due to the ongoing priority work related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across the state and country. The state revenue machinery found it challenging to conduct these elections within the set timeframe because of the scale and urgency of the SIR-related exercise.

Spokesperson Minister Jitu Vaghani, addressing the media, explained the practical challenges in organizing elections for certain categories of cooperative societies given the current situation. The suspension of elections for the management committees of specified cooperative societies is granted under Section 161 of the Gujarat Cooperative Societies Act, 1961. This relief is provided for a period of six months from the date of the notification, exempting these societies from election processes during this time.

Under the provision of Section 74(g) of the Act, cooperative societies where elections are ongoing or due to be conducted have been granted this temporary relief. However, cooperative societies undergoing elections as per judicial orders are not covered by this exemption. The minister clarified that societies with election processes mandated by court directions will not fall under this notification.

During the Cabinet meeting, details were also shared about Gujarat’s participation in the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 held in Davos. A high-level state delegation, under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, attended the global event. More than 58 meetings were conducted with prominent figures, investors, and representatives of multilateral institutions during the five-day forum.

Gujarat showcased its reliability and progressiveness for investment across various sectors at the WEF 2026. The state’s policy stability, long-term planning, industrial base, infrastructure development, and innovation-driven growth approach were highlighted during interactions. There was significant interest in Gujarat’s governance framework and ease of doing business, showcasing the state’s appeal for investors.

The state’s efforts in developing infrastructure were not limited to industry but also extended to the sports sector. The government is focused on creating world-class sports infrastructure alongside industrial growth. Gujarat’s infrastructure development and policies were commended during discussions at the forum. The cabinet congratulated the deputy chief minister and the delegation for their participation at the WEF 2026.
