The Gujarat government, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has announced a Rs 500 crore allocation for creek development in Surat to address the city’s recurring tidal flooding issues. Patel, after reviewing the flood situation caused by heavy rainfall, emphasized the importance of immediate and long-term planning to prevent future emergencies. He directed officials to ensure efficient relief operations, sanitation measures, and financial assistance distribution to affected residents.
In a high-level review meeting at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in Althan, Patel stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat creek-related flooding in Surat. He highlighted the government’s commitment to citizens’ safety during the monsoon and urged public representatives and officials to enhance coordination during natural disasters. The allocation aims to provide a permanent solution to Surat’s waterlogging problems caused by tidal flooding.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, and other senior officials attended the meeting to discuss the ongoing flood response efforts. Sanghavi emphasized the importance of quality work in infrastructure projects and warned of investigations into any substandard or deficient work. The collaborative efforts of various agencies, including the Surat Municipal Corporation, police, and disaster response forces, along with community support, have been crucial in the relief operations in Surat.
