The Gujarat government is set to introduce a new digital monitoring system called the “Lake and Air Watch” initiative to oversee urban lakes and air quality in cities across the state. This initiative, led by the Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM), will deploy monitoring systems in 17 municipal corporations and 152 municipalities to track air quality and assess lake conditions through a unified digital platform. With an estimated budget of Rs 10 crore, the project aims to offer real-time data and early alerts to facilitate timely interventions.
The state government highlights that this initiative aligns with efforts to enhance city sustainability and supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat @2047.” Gujarat, recognized as a significant growth hub, is focusing on sustainable and smart urban development under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership. By integrating existing monitoring systems from various departments into a single digital platform, officials aim to provide up-to-date information on urban lake conditions and air quality.
The “Lake and Air Watch” initiative will leverage satellite technology to analyze factors like lake area, contamination indicators, and algae presence to address challenges such as pollution and water quality deterioration in urban lakes. The deployment of air quality monitoring points across municipal corporations and municipalities will offer real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) data. In case of elevated AQI levels, automatic alerts will prompt swift actions from concerned departments.
Authorities will consolidate information collected through the monitoring systems at the state level using a digital dashboard. This dashboard will feature maps, trends, alerts, and updates on implemented measures to enhance coordination among departments responsible for environmental management. Additionally, the system will ensure transparent dissemination of information to citizens, fostering increased awareness about urban environmental conditions.
The state government anticipates that the “Lake and Air Watch” initiative will play a crucial role in promoting sustainable city development in Gujarat amidst the challenges posed by climate change.
