A program in Gujarat promoting the use of sexed semen in livestock breeding has led to over 90% female calf births, reducing costs for livestock rearers and increasing milk output. The state’s Animal Husbandry Department data reveals that out of 63,439 confirmed pregnancies from 3.41 lakh sexed semen doses, 91.23% resulted in female calves.
Implemented through the Gujarat Bovine Semen Sexing Institute, established with central and state funding, the initiative has produced 8 lakh sexed semen doses since June 2021. This technology involves separating sperm to influence offspring sex, significantly increasing the accuracy of female calf births.
Livestock rearers like Taufikbhai Momin have benefited from this technology, reducing maintenance costs and increasing milk production. The higher proportion of female calves not only improves herd productivity but also reduces the need for external animal procurement, lowering disease transmission risks.
