A lone gunman armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton. The incident took place during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where the suspect charged at the security checkpoint in the hotel lobby around 8:36 p.m.
Washington’s interim Police Chief Jeff Carroll revealed that the suspect, heavily armed with firearms and knives, was swiftly engaged by law enforcement. Members of the United States Secret Service intercepted the individual and exchanged gunfire with him, resulting in a Secret Service officer being struck but saved by his protective vest.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that the suspect, who never reached the ballroom where the event was held, was subdued without being shot. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro credited the layered security system for preventing a potential mass-casualty incident, stating that the suspect’s actions indicated a clear intent to cause harm.
The defendant is facing federal charges for using a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. Authorities confirmed that the suspect acted alone and was swiftly tackled and restrained by officers at the scene.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, authorities assured there is no ongoing threat to the public, with investigations ongoing to determine how the suspect managed to enter the hotel with multiple weapons. Surveillance footage is being reviewed, and a room linked to the suspect has been secured for further investigation.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and evidence response teams are assisting in the investigation, with a focus on uncovering the suspect’s motive and background. Secret Service Director Sean Kern praised the effectiveness of the security protocols in halting the suspect’s advance towards protected individuals.
Officials stressed that the investigation is in its early stages, with forensic evidence being analyzed, witnesses interviewed, and the suspect’s background examined. The motive behind the incident and whether the president was a specific target remain under investigation, with the possibility of additional charges as more information comes to light.
