Harvard University’s Department of South Asian Studies issued an apology for sharing what it called an “insensitive image” related to its Sanskrit program. The department expressed deep regret over the incident and emphasized its commitment to teaching Sanskrit and its cultural significance. They are reviewing their social media processes to align with the department’s values and mission.

Additionally, the department clarified that the controversial post was unrelated to The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard. The Mittal Institute acknowledged the statement released by the Department of South Asian Studies regarding the image.

The Coalition of Hindus of North America praised the official apology from Harvard’s Department of South Asian Studies, calling it a rare instance of a university department acknowledging insensitivity towards Hinduism. The organization appreciated the department’s recognition of Sanskrit’s historical importance and global influence.

Harvard’s website describes Classical Sanskrit as a language that transcends cultures and regions, with a rich history in South Asia. The program emphasizes the importance of Sanskrit in understanding the intellectual and cultural heritage of classical South Asia. It offers various levels of Sanskrit courses, including elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels covering significant literary and philosophical texts.
