The Haryana Congress Legislature Party presented a memorandum to the Governor, highlighting alleged collusion between the BJP and the Election Officer during the Rajya Sabha elections. The Assembly, with 90 members, required a minimum of 31 votes for one seat. Both BJP and Congress were expected to win one seat each, but the BJP’s unexpected move of fielding its Vice-President as an Independent candidate changed the dynamics.
The Congress criticized this move as political horse-trading and misuse of power by the ruling party. They accused the Election Officer of bias, claiming he favored the BJP and the Independent candidate while disregarding valid objections from Congress’s agents. The Congress lodged a complaint with the Election Commission and urged the Governor to investigate the matter and ensure democratic values are upheld.
Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Hooda emphasized the incident’s impact on democracy, stating that the Governor has assured appropriate action. Legislator Bharat Bhushan Batra alleged that the BJP aimed to manipulate the elections by fielding a third candidate to secure victory through questionable means. The Congress vowed to continue its fight against what they termed an anti-democratic conspiracy.
