Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu, along with Cabinet colleagues and party leaders, honored Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary at the Ridge Ground in the state capital. The Congress leaders, after paying homage, observed a two-hour fast in protest against the changes to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
CM Sukhu criticized the BJP-led Union government for renaming and diluting MGNREGA, stating that the essence of the scheme has been compromised. He highlighted that the scheme previously offered employment opportunities, especially to rural youth and women, but these opportunities are now being restricted.
Previously, village heads had the authority to undertake projects like road construction under MGNREGA, ensuring local employment, especially during the pandemic. However, these powers have been revoked, affecting the scheme’s effectiveness in providing employment and unemployment benefits.
