After 32 years, Haryana and Rajasthan signed an agreement on Monday for the Yamuna Water Project, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, Haryana Chief Minister Saini, and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma were present at the event.
CM Saini mentioned that numerous meetings were conducted between Haryana and Rajasthan under the leadership of the Union Jal Shakti Minister regarding the project. The MoU allows Rajasthan to utilize excess rainwater from Haryana between July and October via a dedicated pipeline for drinking water purposes.
The agreement signifies a significant advancement in the project’s execution, with a pipeline set to be laid from the Hathnikund Barrage to Rajasthan for surplus water utilization. CM Saini emphasized the shared responsibility of ensuring water supply to those in need, expressing full cooperation from Haryana to overcome any obstacles in project implementation.
Prior to the MoU signing, detailed discussions on various project aspects were held under the Union Jal Shakti Minister’s guidance. The finalization of the agreement followed extensive deliberations on all pertinent issues. CM Saini expressed gratitude to HM Shah, Patil, and Sharma for their roles in facilitating the agreement.
The Rajasthan Chief Minister hailed the agreement as a historic milestone, noting its significance in supplying Yamuna water to the Shekhawati region’s three districts, ending a prolonged wait. The initial agreement to supply Yamuna water to Shekhawati was inked in 1994, but remained unrealized due to a lack of consensus. Efforts to supply water from Haryana’s Hathinikund Barrage to Rajasthan were renewed in 2024 after earlier stagnation.
