A human rights organization strongly criticized a Pakistani military operation in Balochistan’s Kharan district, which resulted in injuries to four civilians and the enforced disappearance of another individual. The Human Rights Council of Balochistan (HRCB) reported that mortar shelling by Pakistani forces on April 25 caused serious injuries to two women, a man, and a one-year-old child in Lijjay region of Kharan. The victims, identified as Bibi Zakira, Bibi Shafiqa, Hafiz Tahir, and Nadia, were allegedly denied immediate medical care.
Raising concerns about the enforced disappearance of local doctor Shah Jahan during the operation, the rights body stated that he was taken to an undisclosed location while his home was set on fire. The HRCB emphasized that the abduction of civilians and collective punishment of families are unacceptable and unlawful practices. Reports of looting, seizure of goods, and destruction of property by Pakistani forces deepen worries about the situation in Balochistan.
The rights body highlighted that Pakistani authorities are violating constitutional obligations, domestic laws, and international human rights commitments through enforced disappearances and abuses against civilians in Balochistan. The militarization of Balochistan has created an environment where civilian lives and security are constantly at risk, according to the HRCB. Urgent action from international human rights bodies was urged to address the deteriorating situation in Balochistan.
