A human rights organization has called for the immediate release of journalist and human rights defender Ahmad Farhad by Pakistani authorities. The group alleges that Farhad is facing charges due to his legitimate reporting and human rights activities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Front Line Defenders, based in Ireland, strongly criticized the crackdown in PoK, stating that it is part of a broader trend of violence against individuals who speak out against authorities and advocate for accountability in human rights abuses.
Farhad, known for reporting on social justice issues and human rights violations in PoK, was detained by Pakistani police on June 20 in Bagh city. He was apprehended while returning home after covering a protest organized by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) in Rawalakot. Front Line Defenders highlighted that Farhad has been held at the Bagh city police station without legal justification or a formal arrest warrant.
The organization emphasized the vulnerability of journalists like Farhad who challenge state-sponsored misinformation and provide independent reporting from the region. Front Line Defenders also mentioned that Farhad had previously faced violent repercussions for his work, including abduction and arrest in 2024, as well as being targeted and stigmatized by state authorities.
Front Line Defenders expressed concern over Farhad’s safety in custody, particularly in light of his past experience of enforced disappearance. The group criticized Pakistan for its history of repressing dissenting voices, including those advocating for justice and rights peacefully. It also noted that internet blackouts and restrictions on movement in the region have hindered independent reporting and information dissemination regarding human rights violations.
