Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir expressed regret for his involvement in the Trinamool Congress’ strategy to defeat Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the former state Congress president and five-time Lok Sabha member, from Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency in 2024. Kabir, a legislator from Bharatpur Assembly constituency, considered this move as one of the biggest mistakes in his life.

Chowdhury, who had been elected from Baharampur for five consecutive terms, lost to Trinamool Congress candidate Yusuf Pathan, a cricketer-turned-politician, by 85,022 votes. Kabir criticized Pathan, a Gujarat resident, for his absence in Baharampur post-election, stating that his victory had been unfortunate for the constituency.

Kabir, acknowledging his error, pledged to work towards ensuring Pathan’s defeat in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He was ousted from Trinamool Congress shortly before the foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed Babri Mosque at Beldanga, a project he had initiated in Murshidabad district.

Meanwhile, Kabir established his own political party, Janata Unnayan Party, and extended an alliance offer to anti-BJP and anti-Trinamool Congress factions for the upcoming state Assembly elections. However, apart from the AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi, progress in alliance discussions has been limited.
