Acting legend Ian McKellen shared that Alec Guinness once advised him against publicly supporting gay rights. Guinness, known for his role as ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, suggested McKellen should not back the U.K. gay rights group Stonewall. Despite this advice, McKellen continued his advocacy efforts.
During an Italian lunch in Pimlico, Guinness expressed his concerns about McKellen’s involvement with Stonewall. He believed it was inappropriate for an actor to engage in public or political matters. However, McKellen chose to ignore this advice and remained committed to his cause.
McKellen, famous for roles in ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘X-Men’, publicly came out as gay in 1988. He has since been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights, urging others in the industry to embrace their identity. The veteran actor highlighted the lack of openly gay individuals in prominent positions, such as Oscar winners or U.K. political figures.
