Iga Swiatek started her French Open 2026 campaign impressively by defeating Emerson Jones 6-1, 6-2 in just one hour, showcasing her prowess on clay courts. Swiatek, the third seed, displayed her dominance by quickly taking the lead and securing the victory with 17 winners, including a decisive forehand on match point.
The match highlighted the vast experience gap between the players, with Jones, a 17-year-old Australian ranked 136th globally, playing her first professional clay-court match. In contrast, Swiatek, known for her clay court skills with 10 titles, including four French Open wins, demonstrated her expertise by improving her clay court record to 107-18 at the tour level.
Despite Jones showing glimpses of talent, Swiatek’s superior play prevailed. Jones managed to break Swiatek twice due to some shaky service games but was consistently overpowered by Swiatek’s speed and precision. Swiatek, after a brief setback in the first set, dominated the match with a seven-game run in the second set.
Swiatek’s remarkable Grand Slam first-round record, now at 28 wins and one loss, was further solidified by this victory. On the other hand, Jones, in her third Grand Slam main draw appearance, is yet to win a set at this level. Swiatek’s next challenge will be against Sara Bejlek, who advanced by defeating Sloane Stephens.
