The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for severe heat wave and warm night conditions in Sambalpur, Bolangir, and Boudh districts of Odisha for the next three days. IMD Director, Manorama Mohanty, mentioned that temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius have been observed in various parts of Odisha, with Titlagarh in Balangir district recording the highest at 45.8 degrees Celsius. Additionally, 18 places in Odisha reported temperatures of 41 degrees Celsius or higher in the last 24 hours, indicating persistent heat wave conditions.
Hot and humid weather is expected to persist in coastal Odisha districts, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Ganjam districts over the next three days. Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Balangir districts have been issued an Orange Alert for May 28, while Sonepur, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Boudh districts are under a Yellow Alert. The IMD forecasts a gradual decrease in maximum temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius after the next four days, although heat wave conditions are likely to continue in several western Odisha districts till May 29.
Thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds is expected in Mayurbhanj and various coastal Odisha districts in the upcoming days, as per the IMD official’s forecast.
