India and Australia have concluded the necessary administrative procedures to facilitate the export of Australian uranium to India for peaceful applications. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that this significant agreement would bolster India’s clean energy goals and enhance bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following the Annual Leaders’ Summit.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of the agreement in the nuclear energy sector, stating that it would pave the way for Australian uranium supply to India, thereby reinforcing India’s clean energy objectives. Both countries issued a Joint Statement on Energy Security, reaffirming their dedication to enhancing energy trade, supply chain resilience, and the shift towards cleaner energy sources.
Australia and India have finalized the administrative arrangements required for the export of Australian uranium to India under the Australia-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (2015). The exported uranium will be strictly used for peaceful purposes and will be subject to oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In addition to the uranium agreement, both nations expressed concerns about the situation in West Asia and its impact on global energy supply chains and commodity prices. They reiterated their commitment to open markets and rules-based trade. Recognizing each other’s roles in the energy sector, the two countries vowed to maintain uninterrupted energy flows, enhance bilateral energy trade, and strengthen energy supply chain resilience.
India and Australia also pledged to deepen regional cooperation, accelerate the energy transition, promote renewable energy and low-carbon fuels, and attract more investments across the energy value chain. The joint statement highlighted the commitment of both countries to ensuring a stable, secure, and reliable supply of energy products, including coal, diesel, natural gas, and other liquid fuels. Australia acknowledged India’s Global Biofuels Alliance initiative as part of the global energy transition efforts.
PM Modi emphasized the strong strategic partnership between India and Australia, noting their shared values as vibrant democracies and key Indo-Pacific partners. He underscored the common vision and deep mutual trust that underpin the relationship between the two nations.
