India and Brunei Darussalam recently explored ways to enhance their bilateral relations and parliamentary interactions. The meeting between India’s High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, Ramu Abbagani, and Brunei Darussalam Legislative Council Speaker Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Rahman focused on strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
During the discussions, the Indian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam highlighted the mutual commitment of India and Brunei Darussalam to fostering closer ties and parliamentary engagement. This commitment was underscored by various initiatives, including the exchange of books with Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali and meetings with key officials like the Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports in Brunei.
The diplomatic relationship between India and Brunei Darussalam, which dates back to 1984, is built on strong traditional and cultural connections, as well as their shared memberships in international organizations like the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement, Commonwealth, and ASEAN. The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Brunei in 2024 further solidified the bond between the two countries, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
