India and Italy Hold 9th Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi

India and Italy conducted the 9th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in New Delhi, focusing on bilateral cooperation and global issues of mutual interest. Both countries acknowledged the strengthening strategic partnership between India and the European Union, highlighting key agreements such as the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and the Security and Defence Partnership. Discussions also encompassed developments in regions like the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.

The meeting provided a platform to assess bilateral cooperation and mutual interests comprehensively. Officials from both sides expressed contentment with the progress made under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29, particularly in areas such as trade, technology, defense, counter-terrorism, and education. The discussions also emphasized the importance of collaboration in various sectors, including renewable energy and people-to-people ties.

India and Italy affirmed their commitment to combat terrorism effectively through initiatives like the India-Italy Joint Initiative to Counter Financing of Terrorism. Additionally, plans for a Maritime Security Dialogue were discussed to enhance cooperation in maritime safety and security. Both nations also aimed to enhance collaboration in skilling and mobility, particularly in the healthcare sector, under the Migration and Mobility Agreement framework.

The Foreign Office Consultations took place against the backdrop of frequent high-level engagements between India and Italy. Notable recent meetings included interactions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni at the G20 Summit and discussions between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The bilateral relations between India and Italy are on an upward trajectory, marked by regular high-level dialogues and increased private sector engagements, with a focus on deepening strategic partnerships across various domains.
