India and Myanmar held talks in New Delhi regarding the increasing threat of cyber scam networks along Myanmar’s border regions. The issue, highlighted during discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing at Hyderabad House, emphasizes the need for not just bilateral but also regional cooperation. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri mentioned the joint efforts to repatriate Indian citizens from cyber scam compounds in Myanmar, with over 2,400 individuals already returned in the past 18 months.
Both countries have been closely collaborating to address the issue, with ongoing efforts to bring back around 150 more Indian citizens still stranded in such compounds. Misri stressed the importance of regional cooperation, noting that many Indian nationals are trafficked to Myanmar through a third country. The discussions underscored the significance of enhancing cooperation not only between India and Myanmar but also at a regional level to combat this security concern effectively.
Prime Minister Modi and President Aung Hlaing agreed to strengthen bilateral ties across various sectors during the meeting. India reiterated its support for peace and dialogue in Myanmar, offering assistance in areas such as federal governance and economic growth experiences. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson highlighted the commitment to advancing the India-Myanmar partnership for peace, progress, and prosperity, focusing on trade, investment, connectivity, development partnership, capacity building, security, and border management.
