India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, lauded Rinku Singh for his strength in rejoining the team just a day after his father’s passing. Gambhir expressed solidarity, emphasizing the team’s support for Rinku during this challenging period. Ahead of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final against England at Wankhede Stadium, Gambhir delivered an encouraging message to Rinku.
In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir acknowledged Rinku’s courage, stating, “It takes a lot of character to come and join the team. Remember one thing, you are not alone. The whole team is standing next to you during this hour, so stay strong.” Rinku’s father, Khanchand, succumbed to liver cancer after a prolonged battle, passing away on Friday.
Following his father’s demise, Rinku briefly left the team to be with his family for the last rites. Despite his return before the Super 8 match against the West Indies, he did not feature in the playing XI, with Sanju Samson retaining his spot. Rinku, a late addition to India’s World Cup squad, has faced challenges with form, scoring 24 runs in five innings, including a duck against South Africa.
Having struggled in the tournament, Rinku has a modest record against England, accumulating 39 runs in three innings against the Harry Brook-led side. His performance includes five fours and one six, reflecting his efforts amidst personal and professional trials.
