India expressed strong condemnation for the recent attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, resulting in the death of a Serbian soldier. The attack, which occurred near Marji’yun, marked the seventh fatality since March. Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the severity of the incident, suggesting it could potentially constitute a war crime.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that Sergeant Milovan Jovanovic lost his life due to a mortar hitting a UN position. Additionally, two other peacekeepers injured in the attack are currently receiving medical treatment at a UNIFIL facility in south Lebanon. The UN emphasized the imperative need to cease all assaults on peacekeepers, emphasizing that such actions violate international humanitarian law.
UNIFIL initiated an investigation to determine the specific circumstances surrounding the peacekeeper’s tragic death in an area of heightened tension between Israel and Hezbollah. The situation in South Lebanon has seen a rise in violence, prompting UNIFIL to call for an end to the escalating hostilities. Nearly 1,000 Indian peacekeepers are part of the 10,800-strong UNIFIL contingent, with no reported Indian casualties in the recent attacks.
The UN Security Council had previously decided to conclude the UNIFIL operation by the year’s end. Established 48 years ago, UNIFIL faces challenges in maintaining peace in southern Lebanon amid the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. One of its key objectives is to bolster the Lebanese military and assist Beirut in reclaiming control over southern Lebanon. Efforts to restore a ceasefire have been ongoing, with recent meetings between the US, Lebanon, and Israel resulting in renewed commitments to peace.
