India strongly defended its democratic structure, constitutional framework, and cultural diversity during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands. Responding to questions on press freedom and minority rights, senior diplomat Sibi George emphasized that such concerns often arise due to a lack of understanding about India’s history and social fabric.
George highlighted India’s rich religious and cultural diversity, noting that the country is the birthplace of major religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. He underscored that India has been a land where different faiths coexist peacefully for centuries.
The diplomat pointed out that followers of all major world religions have thrived in India for ages, emphasizing the long history of Christianity and Islam in the country. He highlighted India’s tradition of providing refuge to persecuted communities from around the world, showcasing the country’s inclusive ethos.
George defended India’s vibrant democracy, citing peaceful transitions of power and constitutional freedoms. He emphasized the country’s commitment to democratic values and the freedom of expression, noting the high voter participation in recent Assembly elections as a testament to India’s democratic spirit.
Referring to India’s economic progress, George highlighted that the country’s development has not compromised its democratic principles. He invited a better understanding of India’s progress and diversity, urging people to appreciate the nation’s growth and cultural richness.
