India has donated Jan Aushadhi generic medicines and medical supplies to Nauru, a small island country in Micronesia. The donation is part of India’s commitment under the Forum for India-Pacific Island Cooperation (FIPIC) to enhance cooperation in healthcare and mutual interests in the Pacific region. This contribution signifies the enduring partnership between India and Nauru, showcasing India’s dedication to providing affordable, quality healthcare and fostering shared development through beneficial partnerships.
India has been a significant development partner for Nauru, with its assistance being highly appreciated in the island nation. Nauru holds a special regard for India as it was the country that first proposed Nauru’s independence in the UN in the early 1960s, with support from the then USSR. Last November, the Indian High Commissioner in Canberra reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Nauru’s development journey and strengthening cooperation across various sectors during a meeting with Nauru’s President.
In addition to the recent donation of medicines and medical supplies, India and Nauru have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a project called ‘Cycling for a stronger Nauru,’ aimed at developing athletes and promoting health through cycling. This project, supported by India through grant assistance, further solidifies the cooperation between the two countries in the health sector. Furthermore, India previously provided solar equipment and livelihood materials to the people of Nauru, highlighting the ongoing development partnership between the two nations.
