India is actively involved in discussions with the US regarding the Section 301 proceedings announced by Washington. Additionally, both countries are working on finalizing a framework agreement on bilateral trade, as per the Commerce Ministry’s statement. The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has completed investigations against 60 economies, including India, to assess measures taken to restrict imports.
The USTR has suggested imposing extra tariffs on imports from these economies under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974. However, products under section 232 tariffs and some others are exempt from these proposed tariffs. A special provision is also being considered for textile and apparel products to allow certain imports from selected economies at reduced tariff rates.
Stakeholders have the opportunity to participate in public hearings on the proposed tariffs until June 22, 2026, by submitting requests. Written comments can be sent until July 6, 2026, with public hearings scheduled for July 7. The USTR will review all comments and testimonies before making a final decision on the proposed measures.
Senior officials from India and the US are currently engaged in a three-day round of talks in New Delhi to finalize an interim bilateral trade agreement aimed at lowering tariffs. The joint statement issued on February 7 between India and the US laid the groundwork for an interim trade agreement, with both nations committing to broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations.
US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, expressed eagerness to finalize a new bilateral trade agreement with India to enhance market access, reduce barriers, and provide more certainty for businesses in both countries.
