India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has expressed his support for young batsman Sai Sudharsan, confirming his role at the crucial No. 3 position in the upcoming Test against Afghanistan. Gambhir emphasized the importance of patience with Sudharsan, highlighting the need for stability in the batting lineup following Cheteshwar Pujara’s absence.
Sudharsan, who has featured in six Tests with an average of just over 27, is set to receive an extended opportunity in the team. Gambhir mentioned that Sudharsan’s performance in the IPL, where he scored 722 runs, showcases his potential. The coach stressed the significance of providing players with a fair chance to prove themselves.
India has faced challenges in finding a permanent No. 3 batsman since Pujara’s departure, experimenting with various players in the position. Gambhir acknowledged the team’s struggles but expressed confidence in Sudharsan’s abilities for the long term. Despite India’s current sixth position in the World Test Championship standings, Gambhir believes in the team’s potential to compete for a spot in the final.
Ahead of the Afghanistan Test, Gambhir mentioned the importance of assessing spin-bowling options for the upcoming series in Sri Lanka. The competition between left-arm spinners Manav Suthar and Harsh Dubey will help determine the fourth spinner for the Sri Lanka tour. Gambhir highlighted the unique strengths of both spinners and the significance of finalizing the squad composition for the series.
