India has emerged as the global leader in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) for personal health, with 85% of consumers already utilizing AI-powered tools, surpassing major developed markets. A study by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) revealed that Indian users are embracing generative AI at an unmatched pace worldwide. The adoption rate in India significantly exceeds that of the United States (50%), the United Kingdom (43%), and Japan (34%).
Globally, nearly 60% of respondents use AI for health-related purposes, with India standing out as a frontrunner, indicating a growing comfort with digital healthcare tools. This shift signifies a change in how patients perceive medical care, with a preference for a hybrid model where human doctors are supported by AI rather than replaced by it. This approach is particularly favored for tasks like interpreting test results and managing chronic conditions.
The report highlighted that younger generations are propelling this rapid adoption, with 78% of Gen Z respondents and 71% of Millennials using AI for health-related tasks. While current AI use in healthcare centers around chatbots (33%) and wearables (19%), there is a clear demand for advanced “agentic AI” that can schedule appointments, handle referrals, and identify drug interactions. Consumers are increasingly seeking AI systems that can independently perform tasks beyond basic functions.
